Fáilte Ireland survey indicates visitors are moving from ‘dreaming’ to booking holidays

The latest consumer sentiment survey from Fáilte Ireland (released on May 18) indicates that domestic consumers intentions to take a short break in the next six months has increased significantly. They are moving from the ‘Dreaming Phase’ to now actively planning and booking holidays.

Some key takeaways from the Fáilte Ireland sentiment survey:

  • 48% are indicating that they intend taking a short break within the next 6 months. The increases in intention to take a break was most evident in those aged between 18-24 and 45-64.
  • There are subtle shifts by different groups, suggesting targeted marketing will be important. One example the Fáilte Ireland survey points out is that families with pre-teen and teenage children are planning breaks for July and August; while pre-school families can be pushing trips into September and October.
  • 44% of those intending to travel intend travelling with their partner and 40% as a family.
  • Hotels are the first choice (57%), then self-catering (26%) and B&B (19%)
  • Public concern over specific activities is easing. Holidays in Ireland and shopping are two of the activities consumers are least nervous of.
  • Simple reconnections will matter, with many likely to focus on local road trips and short breaks to test the waters before committing to longer ventures.
